Congratulations to NOCSIA past President, Carol Poh, who received the SIA's highest honor, the General Tools Award, at the SIA Annual Meeting, Saturday May 30, 2009. Carol has been an SIA member since the early 1970's, serving in a variety of positions, including SIA President from 2000-02, SIA Newsletter editor from 1980-83 and organizer of the SIA's 15th Annual Conference in Cleveland in 1986. Carol led the battle to save Cleveland's Hulett ore unloaders. She has documented dozens of engineering/industrial sites and structures for the Historic American Engineering Record. Her work for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers resulted in the publication of "Landmarks in Mechanical Engineering" published by Purdue University Press (1997). Carol has also written or co-authored a number of regional history books and articles.
NOCSIA members presenting at the SIA Annual Conference in Pittsburgh May 28-30, 2009 included Rick Rowlands and Dr. Thomas Leary on a panel "Saving the Big Engines." The Tod Engine can be viewed at the Tod Engine Heritage Park in Youngstown. Cleveland Heights resident, Valda Lewis, presented her recent documentary "Devil's Oven: The Fire in the Heart of the Little Cities of the Black Diamond", dealing with the mining communities of the Hocking Hills including New Straitsville, Ohio. NOCSIA member, William Vermes, was recently elected to the SIA Board.
