Empire Plow Tour

Empire Plow began manufacturing farm implements in Georgia in 1840. The company relocated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before the Civil War. In the 1890's Republic Steel offered incentives for Empire Plow to relocate to the current location in Cleveland.

JoDevil's Oven Firein Cleveland Heights filmmaker, Vlada Lewis, CH-UH Public Library and the Northern Ohio Chapter of the Society for Industrial Archeology for a showing of Ms. Lewis’ 52 minute video documentary, “Devil's Oven: The fire in the Heart of the Little Cities of Black Diamonds” Ms. Lewis will talk about the production and answer questions after the showing at the CH-UH Main Library, 2345 Lee Road in Cleveland Heights, 2:00 PM. Sunday, February 28, 2010.

The documentary focuses on the mining towns of the Hocking Hills, southeast of Columbus. It explores the industrial and labor history of the area and the efforts of current citizens to recover from the social, economic and environmental consequences of the mining era. The film takes its name from a century old mine fire in New Straitsville, Ohio, set during the 1884 labor strife that led to the founding of the United Mine Workers of America in 1890.
